Satellites are great.
Satellite communication allows you to distribute large amounts of data quickly, it is accessible almost everywhere (unlike cell phone signals which require a tower), and is more stable in natural disasters which can wipe out other land-based communications.
It seems like a great solution for companies that want to create more connected vehicles.
The only problem is, satellite communication requires a dish antenna. Dishes can be heavy, they certainly are not aerodynamic, and integrating them with a car can be near impossible.
Toyota doesn't believe in the impossible.
They set out looking for new technology, and discovered Kymeta: the first corporation to successfully demonstrate flat-panel satellite antennas. Kymeta uses software and liquid crystal technology in place of the traditional dish to produce a lightweight and flat antenna which can be easily integrated with a vehicle like the Toyota Mirai.
